BBC names Erik Huggers as Future Media & Technology director

Headshot of Erik Huggers, BBC controller, Future Media & Technology The BBC has appointed Erik Huggers as the new director of its Future Media & Technology (FM&T) department.

Huggers will replace outgoing chief Ashley Highfield, who is to become CEO of Kangaroo, the on-demand video project with Channel 4 and ITV, a release from the BBC has confirmed.

As director he will be responsible for the corporation's online, mobile, interactive TV and iPlayer output.

He joined the BBC in May last year as group controller of FM&T having previously worked for Microsoft, where he launched MSN portals for the Benelux countries.

Before joining Microsoft he was director of business development for Endemol's interactive division.

"Erik has been a very strong group controller, FM&T for the last year. He has shown tremendous commitment championing the iPlayer amongst many other projects," said Mark Thompson, BBC director-general.

"I look forward to him bringing his drive and determination to this new role, helping ensure the BBC is fit for the digital future."

Huggers will take up his new role on August 1 and will also become a member of the executive board.
