Jail for Chinese web hack

Chinese authorities have sentenced an internet journalist to 12 years in prison and withdrawn his political rights for four years.

At a trial in Changzou city on 27 September, judges charged Huang Junqiu with 'subversion of the state' for publishing anti-government articles online.

Huang Junqui, who writes under the name Qing Suijun, returned to China in August 2003 after studying in Malaysia and publishing entertainment and political articles online. He disappeared on 13 September 2003 and his family eventually learned of his arrest in January this year.

Several web publications and overseas Chinese groups, including New Century Net, Epoch Times and the Chinese Overseas Joint Conference, campaigned for Huang Junqui's release and handed a petition to the US government and the United Nations.
