Indymedia petition grows

More than 4,000 people have so far signed a declaration of solidarity on the Indymedia website, denouncing the seizure of the network's servers as an unacceptable attack on press freedom.

The statement condemns the seizure as a violation of communication rights, quoting Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states: "Everyone has the right to the freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media".

It also voices concern over the 'growing use of international cooperation frameworks by governments and law enforcement agencies to obscure clear legal process, undermine civil liberties, and erode communication rights'.

The declaration will be online until 31 October when it will be delivered to UK Home Secretary David Blunkett, the director of the FBI and officials in the US, Italian and Swiss governments.
