Thousands of BBC staff are expected to protest today against 3,000 job cuts proposed by director general Mark Thompson as part of a 15 per cent cost-cutting programme.

Members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), broadcast union BECTU and technicians' union Amicus will be protesting at BBC premises including Television Centre. Unions have distributed 20,000 'Fight for our BBC' badges as part of the protest.

The protests have been planned to coincide with the publication of the government's green paper on the future of the corporation, due to be revealed by culture secretaryTessa Jowell at 12.40 today.
