Telegraph cuts staff by 17 per cent

The Telegraph has sacked 15 journalists and 75 have taken voluntary redundancy as managers at the broadsheet title pursue a drastic cost-cutting plan.

The cuts were announced last month by chief executive Murdoch MacLennan as part of a programme to fund new print presses at a cost of £150 million. Fifteen staff were given the news at interviews on Thursday night after managers assessed their performance and attendance records.

Guardian Unlimited reported that more than 110 journalists had applied for redundancy, but applications from some of the newspaper's more established reporters were rejected. The redundancy package included a lump sum of up to 150 per cent of annual salary.

The BBC and Reuters also announced job cuts recently.
