Blogger granted White House approval

Mediabistro's Garrett M Graff has become the first blogger to be granted a daily White House press pass, reports the New York Times.

The Gannon Guckert scandal inspired Mr Graff, who writes a web log on the US-based site for media professionals, to apply for a pass.

Bloggers played a significant role in exposing James Guckert, an unqualified White House correspondent who wrote under the pseudonym of Jeff Gannon and posted chunks of Republican party propaganda as news stories.

Mr Graff wanted to find out how easy it would be to get White House press access but had no success until the mainstream media, including CNN and USA Today, picked up his story.

Nearly 70 bloggers and blogging journalists were given press access to the US Democratic Party conference in 2004.
