Voting opens for the Freedom Blog awards

The Freedom Blog awards, which celebrate blogs worldwide that have campaigned against censorship, are rolling into action. More than 60 nominees have been selected by organisers Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF) in association with news agency Deutsche Welle.

Those making the grade include US web guru Dan Gillmor, a campaigner for the rights of online journalists and Arabic blog Beyond Normal, a specialist blog examining journalism in Arab society.

Internet users can vote for blogs in six categories, including Africa and Middle East, the Americas, Asia and Europe, on RSF's site. Voting closes on the 1 June and the winners will be announced two weeks later.

Earlier this week RSF reported on web censorship by the Tunisian government after the announcement of a partnership between French ISP Wanadoo and Tunisian operator Planet.

RSF secretary general Robert Mènard wrote to Olivier Sichel, director general of Wanadoo, to warn about the Tunisian government's gagging of political news sites. He also highlighted the plight of eight people who were imprisoned for 26 years for visiting sites considered illegal by the authorities.
