New York Times to cut 190 jobs

Around 190 staff at the New York Times Company are to lose their jobs as part of a 'targeted staff reduction programme', the company announced today.

Two thirds of the cuts will be made at the New York Times where around 24 newsroom staff will lose their jobs and a 'voluntary reduction programme' will be in effect. Jobs will also be lost at associated publications including the Boston Globe.

In a statement, the firm said that the cuts represent less than two per cent of the company's workforce and that reductions would not adversely affect journalistic quality.

A spokesperson told dotJournalism that no jobs would be cut at any of the company's online operations, which include NYTimes.com, Boston.com, About.com and IHT.com.

"This is part of an ongoing effort to streamline our operations. Certainly the advertising climate has been difficult and this step is prudent, given that climate."
