Advice on hand for dissenting bloggers

Press freedom group Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF) has published a handbook to provide advice for bloggers and cyber-dissidents.

Blogs provide a valuable platform for discussion and free speech in many countries where the authorities maintain strict control over mainstream media channels.

Weblogs can be set up anonymously and for free, allowing writers to publish alternative opinions and ideas to an international audience.

RSF's handbook provides advice on starting, maintaining and promoting a blog, as well as ethical and journalistic guidelines. It also offers advice on how to remain anonymous and avoid being censored.

US journalist Dan Gillmor, Pressthink blogger and journalist Jay Rosen and web censorship expert Nart Villeneuve all contributed to the guide.

The handbook is published in English, French, Chinese, Arabic and Persian and is available on the RSF website.
