New York Times offers trip of a lifetime to aspiring reporters

US university students have the opportunity to win a 10-day reporting trip to Africa working alongside New York Times multimedia reporter Nicholas Kristof - recently tipped for one of this year's Pulitzer Prizes.

The New York Times is offering the trip to the writer of the best 700-word essay on why they want to go to Africa, and why they will benefit from the trip. Applicants have until 20 April to submit their entries.

The winner will be travelling with Mr Kristof this summer. Possible destinations include Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon or the Central African Republic, and 'backpack' reporter Naka Nathaniel will also be on the trip, helping compile reports and filing by satellite phone.

The student may also be able to blog the trip for TimesSelect, the site's premium content service, and post video reports for mtvU, MTV's university network.

Students need to be over 18 and attending a US university or graduate school. Full details are on the NYTimes site.

Also announced this week, the New York Times is to exploit the craze for genealogy research through a new promotion offering users a free search of Ellis Island's immigration records.

The partnership with the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation provides access to the records of more than 22 million immigrants and passengers arriving in New York between 1892 and 1924. Users access the feature through the NYTimes Store and are then encouraged to buy a $495 framed souvenir.

Yahoo! Finance will be publishing content from the Wall Street Journal's niche websites, it was announced this week. Content from Careerjournal.com, RealEstateJournal.com and StartupJournal.com will be included in the deal, designed to expand the reach of WSJ's specialist sites.

WSJ launched a redesigned site this week featuring additional navigation buttons, 'at a glance' news headlines and a customisable homepage feature, 'My Online Journal'.
