Online Journalism News

NYT.com goes mobile

The New York Times (NYT) has made its entire daily web content available for mobile phones.

From its new mobile site, readers with web-enabled phones and PDAs can scan headlines on the section-fronts, read complete news, world, business, sports and arts articles, as-well-as all other top-level sections of the site.

The NYT claims the site is not dependent on the service provider and consumers with a web-enabled phone, who pay for a web data plan, will be able to access the mobile site for free.

Users also get access to a seven-day news archive. Registration is only required to email articles and to read TimesSelect columns and to utilise the news tracker alert and Times file tools.

"The NYTimes.com mobile site reinforces our commitment to offer readers the high-quality journalism of The New York Times across all platforms," said Vivian Schiller, senior vice president and general manager, NYTimes.com.

"We are thrilled to now offer such a rich reading experience on mobile devices. We will continue to take advantage of all digital technology to provide our readers with Times journalism where, when and how they want it."

The NYT, which developed the site with Starcut USA, is using advertisers to support the service. Microsoft Windows Mobile, the launch advertiser, has an advertising presence on each page.

The US publication also says it has other enhancements in the pipeline, suggesting that mobile readers will soon be able to access weather reports, stock prices, sports scores and movie show times on their phones.
