Guardian Unlimited plans global home page

The chief executive of Guardian Media Group told a world digital publishing conference today (26 October 2006) that a Guardian Unlimited global home page, focusing on international news, could arrive by January.

Speaking at the World Digital Publishing conference in London, Carolyn McCall said: "The great opportunity for us is that 45 per cent of Guardian Unlimited users have never read the Guardian in print; they are new users of the brand by going digital."

Ms McCall said that, in line with the Guardian’s strategy of becoming a leading global voice for liberal thought, the group was planning to increase revenue in the US and soon offer a global home page with a greater focus on international news - although it would predominantly target America.

Ms McCall later told Journalism.co.uk: "We are already being used so much [in the US] that one day we will have a different home page and it could be by January. But I think it won’t be one great big bang, it will be iterative and we will move it on as the months go forward."

She added that Guardian Unlimited would also look to develop more home pages focused on specific international territories.

"I can envisage doing more of them, definitely, I think this one will be global, an international homepage . . . it will be targeted at American users, but I can also see this as an opportunity in other countries in the world in time to come."
