Students sit first NCTJ online journalism exams

Journalism students in Poole, Dorset, will this week become the first in the UK to sit a new exam in online journalism set by the National Council for the Training Journalists.

The fast-track course students are sitting the revamped NCTJ pre-entry examinations with training organisation Up To Speed.

The training centre is one of ten NCTJ-accredited courses running an online journalism element as part of its pre-entry qualification this academic year.

From next year, the online module will become a mandatory requirement of the newspaper reporters NCTJ qualification.

The new qualification requires students to show they can adapt a traditional print story for the web and also compile a video news feature.

Nooooooooooooooooo... Say it ain't so. Not the NCTJ. Not the internet. Please please leave it alone.
Bernie Russell, Senior lecturer in journalism, University of Lincoln - 04/12/07

As the then managing editor of the Kent Messenger Group we introduced a diploma for web journalists back in 2004. The diploma was a hybrid of NCTJ preliminaries and NVQ competencies current at the time. The diploma was devloped by our editorial training manager Neil Webber, who saw our first successful candidate meet the requirements of the diploma in 2005. We should welcome the inclusion of a web element in the NCTJ structure. It will keep it relevant to todayâ
