Reuters plots news stories on interactive map
Reuters has launched a new mapping service linked to its online news stories to help users visualise breaking news.Developed by geographic search company MetaCarta, the NewsMap service appears beside articles on the site's US news channel and plots news stories on a world map according to the places they mention.
By rolling over the pinpoints on the Microsoft Virtual Earth map, users are given a location and news headline linked to the article.
It is hoped that the maps will help users and media organisations track breaking news and news trends more easily, a press statement from MetaCarta said.
"For users, a NewsMap is an interesting way to see where the news is happening and to visually drill down to the places in which they are interested," said Rick Hutton, vice president of content services at MetaCarta.
"For publishers this provides a great way to highlight content in a visually interesting and interactive manner, and provides another vehicle to repurpose valuable content assets."
