Telegraph launches Google Android application

The Telegraph Media Group (TMG) today launched an application for Google Android, the first publisher in the UK to do so, the group said.

Google Android is an open-source operating system for mobile phones. The first Google Android mobile phone was released in the US this week.

The application was developed in the Telegraph Labs, a space launched in May this year to develop new products involving commercial and editorial staff, Paul Cheesbrough, chief information officer, TMG, told Journalism.co.uk.

The application will allow users access to the mobile content on the Telegraph.co.uk (TCUK) site.

It is free to use and can be can be downloaded wirelessly from the Android Marketplace.

"Mobile is a key part of our ongoing strategy to make Telegraph content available to all our customers wherever they are, whenever they want it," Cheesbrough said.

"It's early days for TCUK on mobile," he added.

"The signs so far are encouraging and we hope that will develop further with key products such as the Android application."

"We aim to be available on as many platforms as possible so that all our customers can access our content on their devices."

At present the group is 'exploring' the commercial opportunities for the product, he said.
