Trinity Mirror seeks voluntary redundancies in Scotland

Trinity Mirror is seeking voluntary redundancies at two of its Scottish titles, the publisher has confirmed.

The redundancies are being sought at the Daily Record and Sunday Mail, said Mark Hollinshead, Trinity Mirror's managing director of the publisher's nationals division, in a statement to Journalism.co.uk.

The move follows the introduction this week of a company-wide pay freeze by the group affecting all titles and staff.

"The global economic downturn is having an adverse impact on readers and advertisers," said Hollinshead on today's redundancies announcement.

"Due to these exceptional circumstances it is imperative to protect the business to safeguard our future health."

Blogger Shaun Milne alerted Journalism.co.uk to his post, which suggests that 35 redundancies are being called for.

Trinity Mirror would not confirm this figure, nor whether the jobs cut would include non-journalistic roles.

According to Milne, the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has been involved in talks with management. Journalism.co.uk has contacted the union's Scottish organiser, but has not received a response at time of writing.

An early December deadline has been set for the redundancies, a spokesman for the publisher said.
