NYTimes.com launches new widgets in beta

NYTimes.com has launched its Times Widgets application in beta, through which users can customise widgets with the New York Times's 10,000 RSS feeds.

The widgets, which can be embedded on websites, blogs, homepages and social network pages, can be created using section-specific RSS feeds, for example, business, health and sports, and those from Times Topic pages, such as those focusing on Barack Obama or India.

"Times Widgets is an important tool in our strategy to open up the site and further integrate our content onto some of the most popular and powerful sites on the web," said Marc Frons, chief technology officer of digital operations at the New York Times, in a release.

During the beta stage, users will be able to embed Times Widgets on iGoogle, Netvibes, Blogger, Vox and personal websites and blogs.

It is hoped that users will later be able to embed Times Widgets on NYTimes.com's homepage and other social media and blogging sites.

The widgets application follows the launch of an alternative 'aggregated' homepage for the paper's website, Times Extra, last week.
