The Sun takes place of the Times as UK's second most popular newspaper website

TheSun.co.uk has replaced Timesonline.co.uk as the second most popular newspaper website in the UK, figures released by the ABCe claim.

The number of unique users visiting the online version of the Sun increase to just over nine million in May, a rise of nearly 800,000 on the previous month (9.3 per cent).

The Times saw a dip to 8,730,026 unique users from April's figure of 8,905,701 - a fall of 1.9 per cent.

The site has haemorrhaged users since its relaunch in February, having lost over two million users since its January high of 10,891,378.

The Guardian remained by far the UK's most popular newspaper website - according to ABCe metrics - increasing to 16,062,221 unique users, in May, from its April figure of 15,170,348. An increase of 5.9 per cent, thanks in part to the redesign of its homepage.

Telegraph.co.uk unique users fell to 7,275,288 from a figure of 7,359,312 - a 1.6 per cent fall since April.

All four newspapers release these figures each month as part of the ABCe monthly group product report.

However, reporting of this type could change as ABCe is considering moving to a daily unique user figure to iron out some of the inconsistencies of the monthly reporting. A decision on this will be made later in the summer.
