Union to meet Telegraph bosses over job cuts

The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) is holding discussions with Telegraph management tomorrow to urge them to rethink proposals to axe 90 journalists.

Tim Gopsill of the NUJ said that the Telegraph's management had been surprised by the widespread coverage of the redundancies.

"They are now saying that the figure of 90 journalists was a working figure that may well change, so we hope that tomorrow they will withdraw that," he told dotJournalism.

Last week staff were informed by letter that 90 of the 521 journalists are likely to be made redundant from the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph. Management said that the move was necessary as part of a £150 million investment in new print facilities.

A further 200 jobs could go from the group's marketing and sales departments. The cuts in the editorial department may also include journalists on the Telegraph web team, although no decisions have yet been taken.

"Nothing has been decided - restructuring is ongoing," said a Telegraph spokesperson.
