Tory MEP Daniel Hannan makes Bastiat's online journalism shortlist

Outspoken MEP Daniel Hannan has been shortlisted for the new online category of this year's Bastiat Prize, an international journalism award.

Hannan, who will be judged on his Telegraph.co.uk blog, is one of three entrants shortlisted for the award, based on 10 submissions of online work.

Earlier this year the Conservative politician criticised the NHS on US television. His recent remarks about the health service were rejected by party leader David Cameron.

Last week he came under fire for listing former Conservative minister Enoch Powell, who held strong views on immigration, as a major political influence in an interview in the US.

Marc Sidwell, Bastiat Prize administrator for IPN, told Journalism.co.uk that finalists for the prize are 'judged for quality of writing' rather than their public profile.

Sidwell added that he felt Hannan had been 'slightly unfairly treated' by the media for his recent comments.

Running alongside the MEP is Shikha Dalmia, a columnist at Forbes.com, and Rohan Samarajiva, a columnist at LankaBusinessOnline.

Winners of the prize, which is sponsored by the International Policy Network (IPN), will be announced on October 26.
