Editors to consider the future of news

Leading news publishers from around the globe will meet in Dublin, Ireland next week to discuss the future of the news industry.

The 10th World Editors Forum begins on Sunday 8 June with roundtable discussions on press freedom and on developments in electronic news publishing.

The four-day forum will explore the theme of 'Editorial Excellence in Hard Times', inviting experienced editors and academics to share their ideas and observations on dealing with the challenges facing modern newsrooms.

The editors of both FT.com and the New York Times website - two of the most successful online news publishers - will contribute to a session on developing online content.

Charging for online news and the possibilities of mobile news will also be discussed in a session to be chaired by Andrew Nachison, director of The Media Centre at The American Press Institute.

Zhanna Litvina, president of the Belarus Association of Journalists, will receive the 2003 Golden Pen of Freedom award from the World Association of Newspapers for the group's work in campaigning for the independent press in Belarus.

Ms Litvana will also contribute to a discussion on 'Journalism Under Threat' with other speakers including Robert Fisk of The Independent and Rafeal Marques de Morais, director of the Open Society Institute of Angola.

The forum runs alongside the 56th World Newspaper Congress and Info Services Expo 2003. The events are organised by the World Association of Newspapers, the global news industry organisation, and are expected to attract up to 1,000 senior press executives from 84 countries.

The conference will be introduced by Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, who will deliver the welcoming address with WAN President Seok Hyun Hong and Gavin O'Reilly, President of National Newspapers of Ireland.
