Portal showcases interactive journalism

A new site aims to become a portal for the best interactive journalism on the web.

Interactive Narratives was conceived by Andrew DeVigal, professor of journalism at San Francisco State University and an interactive designer. He had a large list of web addresses for multimedia journalism sites and wanted some method to store them.

"It had to web-based, searchable, categorised, easy to enter and easy to access. As I developed the idea further, I realised that there were other like-minded people that would find this resource useful," he told dotJournalism.

Visitors can search the site by keyword to find relevant content. The database even includes sites designed using Flash, which are often missed by search engines.

Most of the links in the project are US-based sites, but Mr DeVigal hopes eventually to include other sites from around the world.

Visitors can add sites to the database under a number of categories including graphics, narratives or photography.

This month, Mr DeVigal added a blog to the site so that users can discuss the content and help develop a community.

"Most interactive storytellers are in small newsrooms or one-man shops. They do the reporting, the editing, the design and the technical integration at home all by themselves," he said.

"The site allows them to view what others are doing in the hopes of connecting them to a community.

"Ultimately, I want to develop a site that celebrates the fabulous work that’s being done in online journalism. I’m talking about sites that leverage the uniqueness of the internet: the interactivity, the compelling visuals and the powerful sounds."
