AOP awards shortlist announced

The shortlist has been announced for the 2003 Association of Online Publishers awards, pitching some of the UK's best known web publishers against each other.

Emily Bell of Guardian.co.uk and David Felton of Independent.co.uk are among those battling it out in the category for the consumer site editor of the year.

Sites shortlisted for best consumer web site design include Vogue.co.uk, Telegraph.co.uk and NME.com.

But some smaller publishers have managed to make the shortlists, including UK Asian lifestyle site RedHotCurry.com in the category for best digital consumer service.

Competing against web giants BBC.co.uk and FT.com, RedHotCurry's editor Lopa Patel told dotJournalism that they are not cracking open the champagne just yet.

"We're up against the BBC! It's like David and Goliath," she said.

"We're a niche portal so we're never going to be able to have the kind of the audience that the BBC or FT sites have."

Winners will be announced at the AOP's conference and awards ceremony at London's Millennium Mayfair on 14 October. The theme for this year's one-day event will be 'building revenue through loyalty and innovation' and speakers will include Richard Eyre, chairman of the Interactive Advertising Bureau Leadership Council, and Hugo Drayton of Hollinger Telegraph New Media.
