Texas talks new media

Journalists have just a few days left to submit presentations for the 2004 International Symposium on Online Journalism.

The symposium is being hosted by the University of Texas at Austin in the US for the fifth year, and for the first time the event has been extended to two days.

The closing date for research papers is 1 March, and submissions must present original research into any aspect of online journalism such as business models, presentation of content and the legal implications of global web publishing.

The symposium will be held on 16 and 17 April and the event is free. Professor Rosental Alvez, organiser of the symposium, said that around 70 to 80 people are expected to attend.

"The conference this year will be very interesting. This is such a great time for online journalism - everybody has been impressed with the rate of growth in online advertising," he told dotJournalism.

This year's symposium will be webcast and students from the university's school of journalism will also be covering the event online.

Speakers will be announced in the next few weeks and are expected to include representatives from the New York Times, Le Monde, the Washington Post and MSNBC.

The biggest developments to watch over the next year will be the the spread of broadband web connections in the US and the increase of multimedia news produced with Flash software.

"This will become a standard for multimedia narratives - we'll really do what we claimed we could always do with audio and video online. This thing is really going to grow."
