Young reporters have a blast with the BBC

Young reporters looking to break into the BBC have just a few days to apply to the corporation's young reporter scheme, offering more than 30 teenagers the chance to work on regional BBC websites.

The Blast initiative allows young people aged between 16 and 19 the chance to shadow BBC journalists and producers for an eight-week unpaid work experience placement this summer. Their work will be published on the BBC's regional 'where I live' news sites.

Applicants do not need previous experience in journalism, but an interest in the arts is important.

"It's really an insight into working at the BBC,” said Claire McArthur, senior producer for English regions new media at the BBC.

"The students will learn how to work with HTML pages, Dreamweaver, reporting skills and writing - and several previous students have gone on to work at the BBC."

Placements are available across the UK including Truro, Coventry, Gloucester and Jersey. Applicants must be received by 14 May via the BBC site at http://www.bbc.co.uk/jobs/wx60473.shtml.
