Web ads threaten local news

The future of local newspaper businesses is under serious threat from local-search web products, according to a new study by the Neil Budde Group and the Advanced Interactive Media Group.

Advertisers are migrating to the web, says the report, where they can opt for pay-for-performance and self-service ad models. Faced with further competition for classified advertising, newspaper revenues may be squeezed to the point where titles are forced to drop from daily to weekly publication.

The report also reviews the impact of services by Google, Yahoo and Yellow Pages, and offers a four-page action plan to help local news media meet the competitive challenge.
