BBC expands multimedia

More multimedia content on the BBC website is to be provided for Windows Media Player as well as Real Player, according to the BBC's director of new media and technology.

Speaking on Radio 4's Feedback show on 23 May, Ashley Highfield was responding to complaints by web users about the Real Player format which is used to present video and audio throughout the BBC site. Digital radio programmes can be accessed in Real Player and Windows Media Player, but analogue radio programmes can only be downloaded as Real Player files.

"The BBC had to decide which player to use and most people were using Real Player," Mr Highfield told the programme.

"But we are reviewing it, and we hope to make more radio streams available in Windows Media Player as well as other media standards."
