Google has extended one of its key advertising products to allow smaller publishers to cash in when users search from their websites.
Google had previously provided a web search button for publishers, which gave access to the search engine via the site's homepage.
The new 'AdSense for Search' product combines this facility with AdSense, a service where advertisers pay to be featured in search results according to certain keywords. Publishers will now be able to make money from those sponsored links.
"It was really a natural step for Google to expand the offering," said Susan Wojcicki, the group's director of product management.
"We think there are a lot of sites out there that wanted to have that search service."
