F1 web publisher turns broadcaster

Motorsports site Crash.net has added a radio channel to its online news service, providing interviews, features, music and motorsport news updates 24 hours a day.

Crash claims to be the first radio station dedicated to motorsports coverage. Radio technology was new to the Crash web team, but the system was easy to set up and will provide a great channel for advertisers, said Crash.net co-founder Martin Nolan.

"Several internet service providers want to push broadband services, so we're discussing that at the moment," he told dotJournalism.

Crash Radio is managed by broadcast agency Intotomedia from a studio in Bournemouth. Launched on 9 July, the radio service enabled Crash to provide enhanced coverage of the British Grand Prix the following weekend.

"We keep our customers happy with great content - all of which is free," said Mr Nolan.

"And we keep our sponsors happy by encouraging users to click through to their sites."

Nearly one million motorsports fans use the Crash site every month, although Crash also provides news content for other large sites including MSN, Tiscali, Yahoo!. The site already offers Crash TV and SMS (text messaging) news updates for mobile phones.

The Crash network includes a motorsports picture agency and web design company, as well as the Crash.net news site. The team is now working on ecommerce software and a new press release service for sports journalists.
