Online radio stats go public

The BBC's online radio services will be included in future performance figures to be published online every month, according to the BBC's director of radio and music.

Speaking at the 2004 Radio Festival on 14 July, Jenny Abramsky said that the BBC's eighth charter, due to be renewed next year, will take the corporation into the second digital age.

"For all of us in radio that means we have to address and interact with our audiences on many platforms, through many different technologies," said Ms Abramsky.

"I believe our online performance on those platforms should be as public as our analogue performance, so from the autumn we will make these statistics available on the web."

Previously, audience figures have been measured by RAJAR, the UK's radio audience analysts.

Radio Five Live's coverage of the Euro 2004 football tournament attracted a record 840,000 online listeners. A documentary about singer-songwriter Nick Drake became the most requested Radio 2 programme ever with more than 60,000 users in one week.
