European Parliament Prize for Journalism 2010

Deadline: 31/03/10
Details: This award recognises journalists who have covered major European issues or promoted a better understanding of the EU institutions and/or EU policies. Individuals or teams of up to 5 people are eligible to participate with articles or reports. The contributions must have been published or broadcast between 1 May 2009 and 31 March 2010 in one of the official languages of the European Union. All participants must be nationals or residents of an EU Member State and registered journalists.
Categories include: The prize will be awarded in four different categories: written press, radio, TV and internet.
Prize: The winner in each category will receive €5,000.

Control Magazine Competition

Deadline: 05/04/10
Details: Control magazine is a new publication launching in 2010. Their primary aim is to provide a professional platform where proactive young Journalism and Media students can see their work published and gain exposure. The competition is looking for the next generation of interesting voices, clear thinking, fascinating prose and most important of all, a no-fear, no-nonsense attitude in producing news articles ranging from 750-1500 words on current political, cultural, social and enviromental issues.

The Guardian International Development Journalism Competition

Deadline: 30/04/10
Details: Many crucial issues facing the developing world are often overlooked or underrepresented by the media. The Guardian International Development Journalism competition 2010 aims to highlight some of them. The challenge is to write a feature of 650 to 1,000 words on an aspect of global poverty that deserves greater media exposure.
Prize: The 16 best writers (eight amateur, eight professional) will be selected from a longlist of around 40 entrants, all of whom will have their articles published online at guardian.co.uk.

The Maggies 2010

Deadline: 01/05/10
Details: This national poll celebrates and awards the best covers of the past year. The nominated covers submitted for the Awards, which are open exclusively to UK print magazines, will be shortlisted by a judging panel made up of industry heavyweights. This short list will then be put to a public vote in May to award the Magazine Cover of the Year and individual category winners, which will be announced in June. Publishers are invited to submit as many covers as they like per title. For each entry there is a £100 donation to children’s charity Rays of Sunshine. This leading children’s charity grants the wishes of children in the UK who are living with serious or life-threatening illnesses.

Alistair Cooke Award in Journalism: Scholarship scheme opens for applicants

Details: A university scholarship scheme held in memory of a British journalist and broadcaster Alistair Cooke is now open for applicants. Alistair Cooke KBE, who died in 2004, was a journalist famed for his Letter from America broadcasts on BBC Radio 4. The 2011-12 Fulbright Alistair Cooke Award in Journalism is offered to a student to follow a masters programme in either journalism or a specialist subject leading to a career in journalism at an American university. Applicants must be a UK citizen and hold or expect to obtain a minimum 2:1 honours undergraduate degree prior to enrolment with the American university.


Prize: The final award amount will depend on the choices the candidate makes during the university placement process and range from the $25,000 to a fully-funded programme.

XMA Cross Media Awards 2010: Local content & local business for local markets

Deadline: 15/06/10
Details: This year the competition will honour those news publishing companies that have succesfully connected with their local markets to become the No. 1 resource for news, information and advertising opportunities, by employing a range of media channels (i.e. print, online, mobile). Call for entries is now open for all News Publishers who have implemented "local" projects. These projects can be either content related or business related, or ideally contaning both elements.

The Guardian Student Media Awards 2010

Deadline: 03/07/10
Details: The Guardian Student Media awards have now launched for 2010. The awards have been supporting the most talented and creative young journalists for over 30 years. Past winners, including high profile writers such as Andrew Rawnsley, Jonathan Freedland and Emily Barr, have all gone on to have successful careers within the industry. Acknowledging the growth of social media, the awards have a new category to engage with online developments. Students can now enter their blogs and twitter feeds in the digital journalist of the year category, which means that students can enter their work if it hasn’t been published in their student newspaper or worked on their student radio station.
Categories include: Publication of the Year, Reporter of the Year, Writer of the Year, Photographer of the Year, Digital Journalist of the Year in association with NME.com, Broadcast Journalist of the Year.
Prize: One months work experience placement at the Guardian.
