The fourth Wee Walk of 2008 will be held next weekend at Camperdown Park on Sunday 4 May.

The Great Wee Scottish Walk is a two mile charity walk in the park for children aged under 16 years accompanied by their parent or a guardian to support them along the way.

Dundee Lord Provost John Letford will be in attendance at the event at 10.45 am to officially open the proceedings. The walks will then commence at 11.15 am and will then be held at hourly intervals on the hour until 2pm. The Mains of Fintry Pipe Band will start off the proceedings when the first walkers set off around the course and then spur the wee walkers on as they complete the two mile distance in the park. Chaplin’s disco bus will also be on hand to provide music and entertainment at the event.

Entry to the walks is £5 per child and parents and guardians go free. Young entrants completing the walk will receive a medal, certificate and a goody bag for their efforts.

Children can take part and raise money for over 100 affiliated charities as well as a charity or school / community project of their choice or just enjoy the walk and fresh air.

Other activities and entertainment available on the day include - for younger children aged 0-2 years a 100 yard toddlers stroll and a teddy bears hunt. There will also be a charity mascot race and a mini farmers market including a number of local produce stands.

The wee walks are very much family orientated fun events and children often come dressed up in fancy dress to take part. Wee walkers will also have the chance to buy a wee walkers T shirt to wear on the day. Walkers are encouraged to bring along the whole family – man’s best friend is also welcome to enjoy the walk – as long as they are on a lead.

Tesco is the main sponsor of the event which is operated and arranged by walk organizer, Priscilla Turner with the aim of encouraging children to take part in and enjoy exercise and social activities with their friends and family and at the same time raise money for their local charity or community / schools project. Sports personality Liz McColgan and Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon MSP has endorsed the Wee Walks. Sturgeon commented “In a Scotland where too few children are reaching the recommended healthy levels of physical activity and we are seeing rising levels of childhood obesity, it is hugely encouraging to see organisations like the Great Scottish Walks organise events such as the eight Wee Walks across the country. These walks will introduce children to the fun of taking part in physical activity while at the same time raising funds to benefit individuals and communities across Scotland.”

A further four walks will take place across Scotland between April and August at the locations listed below. Last year over 1600 children took part in the Great Wee Scottish Walks and over 6000 walkers in the Great Scottish Walks which are taking place in Edinburgh and Glasgow in May and June these walkers together raised over £1 million for over 100 charities across Scotland.

• Great Wee Scottish Walks is part of the Great Scottish Walk series of walking events. The Great Scottish Walk was first held in Edinburgh in 1998, with over 2,000 walkers taking part in aid of two charities. Now, over 6,000 walkers of all ages, fitness and physical ability participate raising in excess of £1 million for over 100 charities. The Walks are promoted to all sections of the community, particularly encouraging groups, teams and families to walk. Inclusivity is one of the keys to the Great Scottish Walk’s success. Participants may choose from one of three distances; the 12, six or one mile course, after which walkers will be presented with a medal, certificate and a product bag.
