VirtualizeIT wins at Ireland’s Premier IT Awards, the ICT Awards of Excellence, for their Green IT Initiative at Allied Irish Bank.
Northampton, UK, 7 May 2008 – VirtualizeIT, one of Europe’s leading virtualisation consultancies, has scooped the Green IT Initiative of the Year at ICT’s prestigious Annual Awards dinner held last Thursday at the O’Reilly Hall, Dublin. Julian Box, Managing Director, VirtualizeIT commented, “It’s great to receive this award and that the Irish IT market recognises the dramatic impact that virtualisation can bring in reducing CO2 emissions. It’s estimated that in Ireland alone, IT emissions account for up 8% of the countries’ energy expenditure and, by 2011 over a third of organisations’ IT budgets will be spent on energy. The project at AIB is an impressive example of what reductions can be achieved.”
The VirtualizeIT entry with AIB captured the judges’ eye through its impressive resultant environmental savings. The AIB IT Team have calculated that when the project concludes next month, over 400 physical servers will have been virtualised and decommissioned and over 150 new systems virtualised instead of purchasing new physical systems, with an immediate reduction in CO2 emission of 2472 metric tonnes. In total, that equates to the emissions that 665 1.8 diesel cars would produce and would need to be offset by planting 10,893 trees. On an annual basis, the savings year on year from virtualising the normal server growth alone would equate to the emissions of 120 1.8 diesel cars, and would need to be offset by planting 2000 trees. Overall, the project has contributed to a 6% reduction of AIB's total organisational carbon footprint.
Alan Pearson, Enterprise Client Services Manager, AIB, concludes, “Through VirtualizeIT’s comprehensive approach to virtualisation we have made significant inroads into reducing our CO2 emissions and as a consequence, benefited from significant cost savings in terms of utilities and ongoing capital spend. They are a key partner, providing a responsible, independent and practical view of the available technologies within the market place.”
The ICT awards are independent and are judged by panel of Ireland’s leading IT spokespeople and journalists.

Notes for editors
VirtualizeIT have been practicing and advising on energy efficiencies to UK and Irish organisations since 2002. Their tagline, “efficiency through innovation” is paramount within every service and consultation they provide and clearly demonstrates their commitment to help organisations significantly lower energy emissions through the reduction of physical infrastructure in favour of a virtualised environment. This virtualised state reduces electricity consumption through cooling and power; eliminates space required for hardware and optimizes and re-utilises existing resources.
VirtualizeIT’s holistic approach towards reduction of customer’s energy requirements is derived through consideration of the impact of an entire virtual infrastructure; including storage, I/O, server, desktop and network virtualisation. The impact of this, in conjunction with consolidation, offers the opportunity for empowered organisations to dramatically reduce their CO2 emissions.
