Celebrating Schools Day 2008
Every year there are stories about what’s wrong with schools: exams getting easier; too much testing of younger children; behaviour and discipline issues; exam papers going missing… Now a group of teachers and educationalists has decided to try to get more coverage for the positive things that schools do. They have launched “Celebrating Schools Day” which will be held on 15 July 2008.
Celebrating Schools Day will focus on the children and students who work hard to pass their exams throughout the school year – sometimes against all the odds. It will highlight all the great things that go on in schools: the voluntary work in the charity shop; the money raised for good causes; the serious attempts to make the school more eco-friendly; the hours of unpaid overtime put in by teachers running sports teams, choirs and orchestras, clubs and societies; the expeditions; the fun and celebration of the leavers’ ball; the school trips to sites of historic and geographic interest; the endless simple acts of kindness and consideration shown by children, students and teachers, day after day.
The Celebrating Schools Day idea is very simple. The team invites schools throughout the UK to send their local media details of just a few of the great things their school has done in the past academic year.
Celebrating Schools Day is being sponsored by Book-Builder, the company that publishes School Yearbooks.
As Iain Bell of Book-Builder said, “Over half the secondary schools in the UK, and many primary schools, publish a Yearbook, and in most cases the selection of what goes in the Yearbook is in the hands of the pupils and students.
“The image they present in these Yearbooks is an incredibly positive one – completely in contrast with the image of an education service beset by problems.
“Of course, no one would ever say that schooling is all sweetness and light, but looking at all the images and text that the students and pupils have put into their Yearbooks made me very aware that schooling today does include its fair share of fun, happiness and success, and I think we should celebrate this.”
To aid Celebrating Schools Day Book-Builder has opened a website at www.celebrateschoolsday.com at which students can add their comments and thoughts on the best of their time at school this year.
