For centuries, the magnificent Painters’ Hall in London has been symbolic of the skill and ability of the painting craft.

Tucked away in Little Trinity Lane, this City Liveried hall - home to the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers – is steeped in history.

So when Surrey-based Quality Décor secured a commission to complete highly intricate work within the hall’s Court Room, they needed to demonstrate all the flair, talent and expertise of the modern artisan.

Working with architect Andrew Hunter and lighting specialist Roger Beckett to complete the project, Quality Décor lived and breathed the seven week project.

Now their hard work has paid off and Quality Décor has secured a major industry accolade from the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA) for the Painters’ Hall project, at the annual Premier Trophy Awards.

Those at the awards were able to see first-hand Quality Décor’s work – the Painters’ Hall is the traditional venue for the PDA’s ceremony.

The works combined age-old skills - such as gilding, using 220 books of 23 and a quarter carat leaf to highlight mouldings - with more modern techniques including computer visualisation using ICI Dulux’s system to illustrate colour and lighting.

Three craftsmen from Quality Décor worked on the project. They also supervised two of their apprentices on the works, to enable them to hone their skills on a significant historic renovation.

David Powis, Chief Executive of the PDA said: “The PDA Trophy Awards winners represent the cream of our trade and it was delightful to see Quality Décor secure the Small Contractor’s Award for their work within a building which has such historic significance for the industry.”

First mentions of the painters’ company are recorded in the 1200s. The original Painters’ Hall was donated to Henry VIII in 1532, but was destroyed during the Great Fire in 1666. Having been rebuilt, the Hall was again damaged during World War II, but was fully restored and re-opened in 1961.

Charles Pettit, Past Master of the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers, said: “Quality Décor completed the near impossible task of preserving the integrity of the rooms, whilst bringing the environment into the 21st century.”

For Quality Décor, - based in Kenley - the award caps the completion of a successful, high-profile project in the company’s 25th anniversary.

Ivor Macklin, a director of the company, said: “Winning this award cements all that we have been working to achieve over the last 25 years. It was a real team effort and we are absolutely delighted with the outcome.”

Notes To Editors
Prestigious painting and decorating projects from across the country came under the spotlight at the 2008 Premier Trophy Awards.

Standards were exceptionally high as large and small contractors competed for recognition in the annual competition, run by the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA), held on Thursday, June 5.
The Painting and Decorating Association was established in July 2002, following a merger of the British Decorators’ Association and the Painting & Decorating Federation. The British Decorators’ Association was originally founded in 1894.
This organisation is Britain's largest trade body, dedicated to the painting and decorating trade. Members include sole traders through to large-scale national contractors employing hundreds of operatives.
Decorators looking to become members of the PDA are rigorously vetted prior to admission. Members are committed to the highest standards in health and safety practice, as well as training development.
The PDA is proud of its long history and high standards, and a registered member can be relied upon to do a good professional job at a fair price.
