Partnership calls for web to stay open to all
A partnership between the Web Science Research Initiative (WSRI) and the National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts (NESTA) has issued a call for governments, scientists and businesses to do more to ensure the web stays open so that society can utilise the most of its potential and adapt to the rapid growth of the Internet.
MIT and the University of Southampton helped create the WSRI and aims to understand the forces underpinning the success of the web and how those guiding principles can be preserved and enhanced.
Martin Warner, co-founder of Technology of Tomorrow 2008 (www.tot2008.com) and new media entrepreneur says that there will have to be more flexibility on behalf of companies and privacy groups to allow the web to expand and get the most out of it.
“As individuals become more transparent through the web, whether it be through individuals sharing media, using websites like social networking, or the business itself making its users or customers more visible – it is clear that civil liberty groups that focus on areas such as privacy will have to relax their rules and be pragmatic in understanding how they let the web naturally evolve. For instance, the recent case against Google relating to its ‘Street View’ service is exactly the problem coming from the business side,” Warner said.
“Corporations in general have to think more openly and the big players like Google and Microsoft will have to continue to work on standards that lead to open platforms and environments – this will allow new web services to expand and evolve naturally, so that we get the most out of the rich experience that the web can offer,” he said.
For more information of the future of the web, privacy laws and new technology, Martin Warner, co-founder of Technology of Tomorrow 2008 (www.tot2008.com) and new media entrepreneur is available for comments, quotes and interviews.
