iphone This Friday’s release of Apple’s new iPhone is tipped to steal BlackBerry’s dominant position in the business-user end of the mobile phone market with demand for the new handset outstripping supply. However, the device is still facing considerable challenges on a number of fronts.

The new iPhone, which runs on a 3G mobile network, will allow users to surf the Internet at faster speeds than is currently possible on the original iPhone, which uses slower Edge technology. It will also feature built-in GPS technology, which will enable users to use their iPhone as a satellite-navigation device both in-car and on-foot using Google Maps.

Martin Warner, co-founder of Technology of Tomorrow 2008 (www.tot2008.com) and new media entrepreneur says that iPhone’s new price will entice users to purchase the phone.

“In the past iPhone’s biggest challenge was its cost, however with their aggressive pricing structure of the new handset, Apple is aiming for a low price and high volume market. Initially they plan to market the phone to 22 countries and at the end of the year it will be in 70 countries, which is a smart move.”

“It’s clear that iPhone is competing for the business market and is trying to steal market share from BlackBerry, which could provoke a price war”.

In terms of functionality Martin also believes that the iPhone is a more user-friendly device.

Warner added- “It’s the first mobile phone that works much more like a handheld PC and its intuitive keyboard makes it easier for users to conduct a multiplicity of tasks and in terms of entertainment, it offers a far richer experience. The picture quality of videos has been greatly improved and a lot of the glitches in the earlier models have been ironed out”.

Warner believes that the device will face a number of challenges. “Apple still hasn’t opened up its hard drive and if they did, it would make it vulnerable to viruses. It is also disadvantaged by not being able to read Flash on the phone’s browser. Their biggest challenge will be the network carrier issue with the phone only being available on O2 networks. In the current market they will need to be particularly innovative with their incentives to lure customers away from their current suppliers.”

Apple announced details about the new software that will power the next-generation iPhone. Key features include an eBay application, which will help users keep track of auctions and bids, an application for blogging on the go, and BlackBerry-style push-email, whereby messages are delivered automatically to the device as soon as they are received.
