Top Award for Young Painting Apprentice
Returning back from a sunshine packed trip to the Caribbean has not left a young painting apprentice with post-holiday blues.
Tom Alstom has returned to the North West from a dream trip to St Vincent to pick up the top trainee title from industry body, the Painting and Decoration Association.
The youngster, employed by J & S Seddon Painting Limited, fought off competition from across the UK to secure the Painting and Decorating Association’s contest - sponsored by Yellow Pages - to find the best trainee in the trade.
Tom, who lives in the Walmer Bridge area of Preston, was announced the winner at a prestigious awards ceremony, held at the magnificent Painter’s Hall in London by the Association - the trade body representing painters and decorators across the UK. His training manager, Kevin Smith, collected the title on Tom’s behalf as the apprentice basked on the beach.
A panel of specialist, independent judges from the Institute of Clerk of Works and the Association of Painting Craft Teachers put Tom in first place after months of research.
Tom said: “I was shocked and delighted to hear I’d won. I was on holiday in St Vincent when the award’s ceremony took place, so I heard I’d won by text.”
Based at J & S Seddon’s Preston office, located in Longridge Road, Ribbleton, Tom is currently on day release studying for an NVQ Level 3 in Painting and Decorating at Preston College.
Stuart Seddon, chairman of J & S Seddon Painting, said: “It was a deserved win. Tom has worked hard in his training and studies and takes a pride in the work he does.”
J & S Seddon Painting and J & S Seddon Maintenance are part J & S Seddon Limited, which also includes J & S Seddon Building and 4m flooring uk Limited. It has a workforce in excess of 1,000 people. The company has its headquarters in Stoke-on-Trent and regional offices across Britain.
