Student Ryan is a Diamond Success
Ryan, is among three finalists in the Apprentice Paperhanger of the Year competition, organised by the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA).
Victory would make it a double for his employer, Diamond Services of Salford, after colleague Simon Muscat took the title last year.
Ryan, aged 18, is a painting and decorating student at Salford College.
He was shortlisted following a practical contest at New College, Nottingham, which tested the ability of apprentices to match and cut paper accurately, get levels on borders correctly in place and apply paper smoothly with no blisters.
Final judging has already taken place but the identity of the winner will remain a secret until the PDA annual conference at Oxford on October 25.
The winner will receive £300 cash. Second prize is £200 and third prize is £100. All three finalists will also receive a set of tools.
The contest is now in its twelfth year. David Powis, chief executive of the PDA, said: “All the entrants worked hard and applied themselves well in the contest. “Judges faced a difficult task to name three finalists, as the quality of the work among all the entrants was of a very high standard.”

Notes To Editors
The Painting and Decorating Association was established in July 2002, following a merger of the British Decorators’ Association and the Painting & Decorating Federation. The British Decorators’ Association was originally founded in 1894.
This new organisation is Britain's largest trade body, dedicated to the painting and decorating trade. Members include sole traders through to large-scale national contractors employing hundreds of operatives.
Decorators looking to become members of the PDA are rigorously vetted prior to admission. Members are committed to the highest standards in health and safety practice, as well as training development.
The PDA is proud of its long history and high standards, and a registered member can be relied upon to do a good professional job at a fair price.
