Young Seddon Painters are Treble Tops

J&S Seddon apprentice Craig Martin helped his company complete a prestigious hat trick by taking first place in the Johnstone’s Paints Young Painter of the Year contest.

Craig, of Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, won Gold following a rigorous two day final.

The 20-year-old’s success is the third of the year for J & S Seddon Painting in a round of national contests - and reflects the company’s proud commitment to training its employees.

His workmates James Phillips, aged 21, of Kidsgrove, won the title of Crown Trade Young Decorator of the Year 2008, while Tom Alston, 20, of Preston, took first place in the Painting and Decorating Association’s (PDA) Apprentice/Trainee 2008 competition.

Craig, a painting and decorating student at Stoke-on-Trent College, had to accurately complete several demanding painting tasks to win the Johnstone’s title.

“We were given designs and measurements and we had to accurately scale up the jobs before painting them,” said Craig. “Challenges included painting the Johnstone’s Paint Football Trophy and completing complicated special effects work.”

Craig had to qualify for the final by winning a West Midlands regional heat.

All J & S Seddon (Painting) apprentices attend college courses but also benefit from access to the recently opened training centre.

Craig added: “The work we do at the training centre on Tuesdays is especially helpful and helps us to support what we learn at college, which may be why we have all been successful.”

He picked up prizes including a television, iPod, digital camera, tools and equipment.
