Some of the nation's largest fitness chains, including Fitness First and LA Fitness, are offering free membership trials to help people get fit during this festive season.

The free trials, available nationally, are intended to offer small 'taster' sessions, giving access to all facilities and gym equipment for a limited-period.

Christmas is that time of year when many of us find ourselves piling on a few extra pounds. The copious amounts of food and drink, not to mention chocolate, can all contribute to weight gain.

The taster sessions are great news for people who had previously shied away from exercise, or for those who wish to try the gym without committing to a full membership.
