Phil Baty becomes associate editor (news and opinions) at Times Higher Education magazine
Baty joined Times Higher Education in 1996, firstly as a reporter and later as a chief reporter, deputy news editor and, most recently, news editor.
His new role will involve editing and commissioning content in the news section, research and people pages, as well as commissioning opinion pieces from members of the higher education community, he told journalism.co.uk.
Commenting on his new role, Baty said: "This is a very exciting time for Times Higher Education. Our £2 million re-launch in January, when we changed our name from The Times Higher Education Supplement and moved from being a tabloid newspaper to a quarto magazine, has been an astonishing critical success.
"My new role, at a publication I have served for well over a decade, allows me, with the rest of the editorial team, to build on the publication’s most radical change in its 36-year history, and to cement its status as the UK's only stand-alone weekly news publication dedicated to higher education and its staff. Our traditional strengths have been in news, analysis and debate, and I'm delighted that my new role allows me to be at the forefront of this."
