Confused by the recent headlines about Orwellian government surveillance of our online lives? The stories relate to the EU’s Data Retention Directive which must be transposed into UK law soon. The UK, or rather the Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has decided that records of our email, mobile and internet activity should be held centrally in a vast database under Government control.
