Having been party to some very interesting debates about where the NUJ's magazine The Journalist should be headed under its pending new editorship, I felt I needed to know more about the candidates and that some of the debates surrounding this appointment deserved a wider audience than just current NUJ members.

While non-members may not be able to vote, many candidates state they wish to use The Journalist to reach potential new members and it struck me that an open online debate might just be one way to get that particular ball rolling.

We will attempt to moderate this debate lightly; however any plainly abusive or potentially defamatory posts will be removed as will any spam. If you spot anything of this nature before we do, please use the 'report this post' button.

If you are new to bulletin boards, read this guide, it includes useful tips on how you can monitor replies to your posts.

Finally, please be aware that you may not get immediate responses to your questions to the candidates and not all candidates may take part (most have expressed an interest, but they are busy people!).

When you post a new question, please create a new topic. That way each issue will be threaded nicely!

We will keep this board open until Friday 6 November 2009 (the final deadline for ballot papers) after which it will most likely become read only.

It looks like most of the candidates who agreed to take part will be posting over the weekend, so please watch this space. In the meantime, you can hear what they had to say at the London Press & PR Hustings earlier this month.

For some reason, John couldn't reach my hotmail address so my replies and my first topic begin only from tonight.

Anyone wishing to ask me a question directly can do so on nujfrank@hotmail.co.uk.

Cheers, colleagues.

And a reminder that there's a hustings meeting in Manchester on Thursday, hosted by Manchester Branch: 7pm to 9pm, Room 1, Friends' Meeting House, 6 Mount Street, Manchester, M2 5NS.
See you there!

Hi Michael

Do you happen to know if anyone will be recording the proceedings this time and publishing the files on the web? IE audio and/or video? If so, please let us know the link.
