Is it worth doing the NCTJ in my case
« on: January 25, 2013, 11:33:32 AM »
Hi there,

I am in a bit of a quandary. I have a fair amount of broadcast journalism work experience, but have always felt that not having a qualification has been a stumbling block.

I also need to raise my profile, so to speak, and so in addition, have thought about going into feature writing for newspapers.

Do you think doing the NCTJ journalism newspaper course would be worth having under my belt?

Thanks for reading

Caveat: I am not qualified to give career advice...

But: You say you have a lot of broadcast journalism work experience. Do you have any formal training for that field?

Feature writing is quite a different kettle of fish from news writing, so you might want to look for a course that focuses on that area. But if you can write well and have a strong sense of what makes a good feature story, lack of qualifications will not necessarily be a handicap as long as you can get yourself published in a few places first.
