Self-study Teeline - any recommended materials?
« on: May 03, 2009, 11:16:02 PM »
Hi,

I am interested in studying Teeline on my own, as I cannot afford to pay for a course, having spent all my savings on my journalism course last year.  :( I intend to work mainly freelance, not for a newspaper, so, theoretically, I don't need to have shorthand. However, my note taking skills are slow and not v. good at all, so it would help to have some shorthand when doing interviews.

Would anyone be able to recommend me a good self-study book, with CD maybe, that I can use at home? Has anyone used Teeline for Journalists by Dawn Johnston? Amazon keeps recommending me that one, but not sure if any good.

I studied Gregg shorthand for a year in the US years ago and still remember some of it. I wouldn't mind studying Gregg again, but I can't find any reference materials I could use for self-study, so I guess Teeline is the safe one to go for? Does anyone have any idea what speed one can achieve through self-study?

Any tips greatly appreciated.

Gregg works for me and the materials are all available for free here http://gregg.angelfishy.net/

I think seeing as you already have a background with Gregg it makes sense to re-learn it for free rather than investing in mastering anothering shorthand.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for that. At last someone replied to my query. Phew! I was starting to wonder if no journalists here had any shorthand...

I think that was the answer I was hoping for actually. Re-learning something I have once learned sounds more sensible than starting from scratch. And I'm liking the word "free" too.  :D

Much appreciated.

I learned my Teeline shorthand theory with this online course - www.teelineonline.com

It was excellent.  Like being in the classroom and amazing value for money.

Hi, I purchased Ann Dix's Teeline for shorthand whilst I was at University in 2009.

Just recently refreshed my knowledge on it and trying to get my speed and accuracy up to speed.

If you need some exercises to do, I found this one very helpful and it's free: http://www.teelineshorthand.org/Pages/freeteelineshorthandlesson.aspx
