NCTJ Friday Placement
« on: January 12, 2013, 11:54:30 PM »
Hi

I'm starting the NCTJ Diploma in a couple of weeks. I've just been for a trial day at a local paper in London to secure my Friday placement there. I was quite surprised that, when I got there, I was put in front of a computer and told to get on with writing 2 articles for next week's paper. I received no guidance or instruction nor even shown where the toilets were!

Is this normal? Are they all like that? I don't mind getting stuck in at the deep end but I'm not sure how much I can learn by being left totally to my own devices. I want to learn from the people who have the experience at the paper.

Does anyone have any advice about this or any recommendations from their own experience?

Thank you for your time

Amelia

If you're flustered, just ask a couple of questions to the editor or other paid-up journos in the newsroom - it's what they expect. And your writing will be meticulously sub-edited before it goes live, and nobody will be expecting you to come out with an exciting story of scandal and corruption - they'll be fine with you phoning the council and talking about snow preparedness, or anything else you can come up with.

I would guess they're trying to test your initiative by throwing you in at the deep end. Ask experienced people for guidance and I'm sure you will receive it.

Thanks, that's helpful.
The atmosphere didn't seem that conducive to asking questions but maybe I just need to 'man-up' a bit.
If that is a typical experience then I'm happy to stick with it.

Thanks for your reply
