Alex Green has been appointed director of digital publishing at Johnston Press, it was announced yesterday.

In his new role, which commences in April, he will be in charge of driving and shaping the company's digital publishing strategy.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Green said: "Johnston Press has already built a strong locally focused online presence. I look forward to playing my part in making the group a leading publisher of digital content in the market it serves."

Chief executive of Johnston Press, Tim Bowdler added: "Alex brings a wealth of experience to Johnston Press, his appointment underlines our commitment to the rapid development and growth of our digital publishing actives."

Mr Green previously worked at News International and the Virgin Group, holding various senior roles and becoming a staunch expert in growing businesses in converging areas of media and technology.

Johnston Press revealed last week in its yearly results an impressive growth in traffic and profit within its digital publishing division.

Page impressions for its 288 local and regional sites are up by 49 per cent, exceeding 30 million per month and more than 2.5 million unique users. Plus its total online revenue is also up by 32 per cent to £8.3 million, producing a contribution to profit of £5.8 million.
