The BBC has announced key changes within its senior editorial team in current affairs and newsgathering.

Karen O'Connor, currently editor of BBC Two's This World has been appointed as creative director, television current affairs and Jon Williams, current TV newsgathering editor, has been announced as the new world news editor.

Ms O'Connor new role, which commences on 1 March, will involve taking responsibility for the creative leadership and management of the current affairs department in London and Manchester.

George Entwhistle, head of current affairs, said of Ms O'Connor: "I know her energy, commitment and imagination are going to be crucial to the way we restructure and reinvigorate the department over the months ahead."

Mr Williams, who succeeds Jonathan Baker as World News editor, previously worked on the Six O'Clock news as home news editor and editor of the BBC's live political programmes.

Fran Unsworth, head of newsgathering at the BBC said: "Jon will bring great energy, strong organisational and editorial skills and vast experience of both newsgathering and programming to the job."

Mr Williams will take up his new post on 13 March.
