The Daily Telegraph has appointed Geoffrey Lean as consulting editor for the environment. He will be writing a weekly column for The Daily Telegraph on environmental issues.

Lean has covered the environment for 39 years, as environment correspondent and environment editor at three titles: firstly at the Yorkshire Post, then the Observer and most recently at the Independent on Sunday since 1993.

He has also written for a range of publications including the Observer, the New Statesman, the Daily Mail, and the Evening Standard and authored numerous environmental books and reports.

Previous awards include a special 'Foundation Award' - a lifetime achievement prize from Reuters and IUCN in 1998; 'Scoop of the Year' in the London Press Club Awards 2000; 'Scoop of the Year' in the British Press Awards 2001, and the Martha Gelhorn Award in 2002.

"We’re thrilled to have Geoffrey joining our team. He is a world-renowned journalist and will be making a major contribution to our environmental coverage. His weekly column will appear in the Saturday Telegraph - a must-read at the weekend," said Mark Skipworth, executive editor at Telegraph Media Group, who is responsible for the Saturday Telegraph.

"I never expected to work for the Daily Telegraph, but I’ve become convinced there is a bold and groundbreaking new spirit at large in the paper, which makes it a most attractive paper to join. William Lewis has asked me to help redefine its environmental coverage and policies and I am enormously looking forward to taking up the opportunity," Lean said.

"I have had 16 great years on the Independent on Sunday, and am tremendously grateful to it for taking the lead on the environment long before it became fashionable, and to successive editors for enabling me to cover a wide range of issues and conduct a series of campaigns."
